Transnet has announced the 2026 Work Integrated Technical Learner (WITL) Programme, designed specifically for recently qualified artisans holding a Red Seal certificate. This 24-month learnership aims to provide structured workplace experience in technical trades such as Carpentry, Instrumentation, Plumbing, and Diesel Mechanics, across multiple locations in South Africa.
About the Opportunity
The WITL programme helps bridge the gap between obtaining a trade qualification and gaining practical workplace experience—an essential step that many newly qualified artisans need to enhance their employability. Instead of training apprentices from the start, Transnet targets individuals who have successfully completed their apprenticeship and passed their trade test, facilitating hands-on exposure, mentorship, and industry-specific work experience within an operational environment.
Who Can Apply
- South African citizens aged 18 to 35 years
- Recently qualified artisans with a relevant Trade Test/Red Seal Certificate
- Applicants with less than one year of practical work experience
- Applicants must meet the trade-specific requisition requirements and provide valid supporting documentation
Note that applicants with disabilities are encouraged to apply, provided they submit a medical confirmation letter. Employment equity considerations apply.
Programme Details and Available Trades
- Carpentry (Req 6002): Positions available in Cape Town, Durban, Richards Bay, Saldanha, East London, and Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha. Closing date: 14 October 2026.
- Instrumentation (Req 5971): Available in Salt River, Cape Town. Closing date: 13 October 2026.

The programme duration is 24 months and focuses on applying technical knowledge in practical environments involving maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting, safety compliance, and reporting.
What to Expect
Participants will gain direct exposure to industrial operations, mentored by experienced professionals to develop their competencies beyond formal trade test success. Activities include routine maintenance, diagnostics, safety adherence, and documentation of completed tasks, helping build a robust portfolio of work experience.
Important Information Before Applying
Applicants should carefully review the specific requisition matching their trade and ensure all eligibility criteria are met before submitting an application. Selecting the correct trade and location, verifying qualification dates and documentation, and providing accurate personal and professional details are critical. Misrepresenting qualifications or experience can lead to disqualification.
Do not wait until the last day to apply to avoid technical issues that may prevent successful submission.
