Applying for UIF benefits involves more than opening a website and entering your ID number. You need to choose the right benefit, provide accurate employment details and keep track of any information the Fund asks for after submission.
This guide helps you prepare for that process. If you have already checked your UIF employment record, you can use the steps below to organise your application before moving to the detailed UIF Online guide.
Where Should You Start Your Application?
UIF Online is the official platform for submitting employee benefit claims. It also provides a way to follow the progress of an application. The older uFiling employee claims portal no longer processes new benefit applications, although older pages about uFiling may still appear in search results.
Check the address before entering personal information: uifonline.labour.gov.za. A message forwarded through WhatsApp or social media may mention UIF without leading to an official service. You do not need to pay someone to open the portal for you.
The next page explains the application and tracking steps. You will remain on this website until you choose to open the official UIF portal.
First, Identify the Benefit You Intend to Claim
UIF handles different types of benefits. An unemployment application is generally relevant when your employment has ended and you meet the applicable conditions. Other circumstances, including illness, maternity or parental leave, require a different benefit application.
The reason your employment ended matters. Retrenchment and the expiry of a fixed-term contract are different from resigning. Select the option that accurately describes your circumstances and read the requirements shown for that benefit. If you are unsure which category applies, ask the UIF before submitting information you know may be incorrect.
What Information Should You Have Ready?
Gather the details you can confirm before starting an online session:
- Your identification and current contact details.
- Your employer’s correct name and your employment dates.
- Your last day of work and the reason employment ended.
- Banking details for the account you intend to use.
- Relevant employment documents, such as payslips, a contract or a letter explaining why the job ended.
Depending on the claim, the UIF may need an employer declaration, a salary schedule or a banking authorisation. UI-19 is an employer declaration; it is not the employee’s unemployment application form. The documents requested can depend on your benefit type and the information already held by the Fund, so follow the current portal instructions for your case.
Do not guess a date or reason for termination simply to move to the next screen. If an employer’s information appears wrong or incomplete, make a note of the discrepancy and find out how to correct it.
A Practical Way to Complete the Online Process
Set aside enough time to read each screen. Use a device and connection you trust, and keep your documents available so you can compare them with the information you enter.
The process can be organised into four stages:
- Access your UIF Online account. Register or sign in using the options currently displayed by the official portal.
- Complete the appropriate benefit application. Check your personal, employment and banking details before continuing.
- Provide the requested documents and submit. Make sure files are readable and correspond to the information in your application.
- Save the confirmation. Record the date of submission and any claim or reference number the service gives you.
Reaching the final screen without submitting is not the same as lodging a claim. Look for a confirmation from the service and retain it for follow-up.
How Do You Track a Claim After Submission?
Return to UIF Online to review the information available for your application. Keep a simple record of when you checked, what the portal displayed and whether the UIF requested further information.
A claim can need additional documents or clarification before a decision is made. If you receive a request, follow its instructions and keep a copy of your response. Avoid starting a second application just because the first has not yet resulted in a payment; first check its status or ask the UIF what is outstanding.
Submission, approval and payment are separate stages. A submitted claim has been sent for assessment. Approval means the Fund has made a decision. Neither a contribution record nor a submission confirmation promises a particular payment amount or date.
What If You Cannot See Your Employer’s Details?
If your work history is missing or the dates do not match your documents, gather your payslips and other evidence of employment. Ask your employer about its UIF declaration and contact the Fund to find out what you should provide.
You can call the UIF contact centre on 0800 030 007 or seek assistance at a labour centre. Keep the reference for any enquiry so you can explain the issue clearly when following up.
Before You Continue
Check that you know which benefit you are applying for, have your employment details ready and can access the official portal. Once you submit, keep the confirmation and respond to any request from the UIF.
