Northam Platinum’s Booysendal operation is offering three learnership programmes for 2026 aimed at individuals interested in careers in South Africa’s mining, mineral processing, and engineering fields. These learnership opportunities include Mining, Metallurgy, and Auto Electrician pathways, each with specific educational requirements and training commitments.
About the Learnerships
The learnerships are structured under the 18.2 type and take place at the Booysendal Platinum Mine, located near Mashishing (Lydenburg), Roossenekal, and Steelpoort—on the border between Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces. Northam Platinum is part of South Africa’s platinum group metals industry and uses mechanised mining equipment.
Who Can Apply and Requirements
- Mining Learnership: Requires Grade 12 or equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification including Mathematics and Physical Science. Applicants must be willing to commit to the full training period and submit certified copies of qualifications and results. (Reference: BDHR19/26)
- Metallurgy Learnership: Also requires Grade 12 or equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification with Mathematics and Physical Science. Commitment to full programme duration and certified documentation submission are necessary. (Reference: BDHR18/26)
- Auto Electrician Learnership: Designed for candidates holding Grade 12 or NCV Level 4 with additional N2 level subjects: Mathematics, Engineering Science, Industrial Electronics, and Electrical Trade Theory. Certified qualifications must be included. (Reference: BDHR20/26)
Programme Location and Duration
The learnership programmes are hosted at the Booysendal Platinum Mine site near Mashishing, Roossenekal, and Steelpoort. They provide foundational and practical training designed to prepare learners for various specialised roles within mining operations, including underground and surface mining, mineral processing, and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment.
Application Closing Date
Applications for all three learnerships close on 30 September 2026. It is important to apply before this deadline to be considered for selection.
Application Process and Documents Needed
Applicants should prepare a comprehensive and updated CV along with certified copies of South African ID documents, educational qualifications, and academic results. These must be clear and legible scans, with no alterations to academic records.
Applications should be submitted by email to [email protected]. The subject line of the email must clearly mention the learnership programme and the corresponding reference number:
- Mining Learnership – BDHR19/26
- Metallurgy Learnership – BDHR18/26
- Auto Electrician Learnership – BDHR20/26
It is recommended to carefully match your qualification with the specific learnership and reference number to avoid confusion. Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted, and if no communication is received within 21 days of the closing date, applicants should consider their applications unsuccessful.
Additional Considerations
Candidates are encouraged to research each career pathway thoroughly before applying. Mining operations cover a range of professional areas beyond manual extraction, including production planning, safety, processing, engineering, and electrical maintenance. Prospective learners can utilise career planning resources to explore qualification and career development routes within mining and related sectors.
Auto Electrician applicants, in particular, should verify their technical and subject requirements carefully, as this pathway demands specific N2-level technical subjects reflecting higher technical competence.
