Unitrans has announced a temporary General Worker vacancy based in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, operating under the Greif Vanderbijlpark contract within the Consumer division. This role is suited for individuals with some cleaning, housekeeping, agricultural, industrial, or logistics-related experience, able to handle physical tasks around heavy equipment.
About the Role
The General Worker will ensure clean, safe, and hygienic environments in various operational areas including workshops, loading zones, offices, wash bays, and around machinery used in sugar cane logistics. The work involves clearing debris such as cane residue, mud, leaves, spills, and other waste that could compromise safety or disrupt operations.
Who Can Apply and Requirements
- Applicants should ideally hold a Grade 12 certificate or National Certificate as a minimum, though Grade 10 is also considered.
- Experience of one to two years in environments such as industrial, agricultural, or logistics cleaning is preferred.
- Familiarity with working close to heavy machinery like trucks and tractors is an advantage.
- Basic knowledge in handling cleaning tools and chemicals, personal protective equipment (PPE), and safety protocols is beneficial.
- Physical fitness to perform manual labor including lifting, bending, standing for long periods, and walking on uneven surfaces is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and deep cleaning across operational areas including workshop floors, benches, storage zones, and ablution facilities.
- Manage waste by collecting, separating, and disposing according to site procedures, including assisting with recycling and safe disposal of oil-contaminated materials.
- Maintain cleanliness and safety in fuel stations, parking lots, wash bays, and storage yards.
- Identify and promptly report safety hazards and equipment issues to supervisors.
Work Environment and Conditions
The role demands both indoor and outdoor work, with exposure to varying weather, dust, noise, and debris. Compliance with safety standards including PPE use is mandatory. Shift work, including weekends and public holidays, may apply depending on operational needs.
