Once you have chosen the benefit you need and gathered your employment details, you can move from preparing a claim to submitting it. UIF Online is the official service for employee benefit applications. It lets you complete an application and follow its progress afterward.
The steps below focus on an unemployment benefit claim. Other UIF benefits may ask different questions and require different supporting documents. Always follow the instructions shown for the benefit you select.
1. Open the Official UIF Online Portal
Go to uifonline.labour.gov.za/uifOnline/ and check the address before entering your ID number or any other personal details.
Register as an individual if you are a new user, or sign in if you already have an account. The portal’s registration and login screens provide the current instructions for accessing your profile. If you have trouble signing in, use the recovery options on the official site rather than creating repeated applications under different details.
The older uFiling employee claims portal no longer processes benefit applications. If an old article sends you there to lodge a new claim, return to UIF Online.
2. Choose the Benefit That Matches Your Circumstances
Select unemployment benefits if your employment has ended and that is the benefit you intend to claim. Do not select unemployment simply because you cannot work at present: illness, maternity, parental and other benefits have their own application routes.
Read each question about your employment carefully. The unemployment application may ask about your occupation, qualifications, work-seeker status, availability for work and whether you have returned to employment. Answer according to your actual situation. The questions displayed by the live portal take priority over any example in a guide.
3. Check Your Employment and Banking Information
Compare the employer’s name, employment dates and reason your work ended with the documents you have. An incorrect end date or a different reason for leaving can create a problem when your application is checked against employer records.
Provide the banking information requested by the service accurately. The Department also publishes a UI-2.8 banking authorisation form and a UI-19 employer declaration among its UIF forms. These serve different purposes: UI-19 records employer information; it is not a form you complete as your unemployment application. Use the forms or uploads requested for your particular claim.
If your employer’s declaration is missing or appears inaccurate, do not invent an answer to make the information match. Keep your payslips and employment documents, and ask the UIF how to resolve the discrepancy.
4. Review and Submit the Application
Before the final submission, check:
- Your name, ID or passport details and contact information.
- The benefit type you selected.
- Your employer and employment dates.
- The reason your employment ended.
- Your banking details and any files you have attached.
Submit only when the information is accurate. Save or note the confirmation and any claim reference shown after submission. Keep your own record of the date, the benefit type and the documents provided. A completed form that has not been submitted is not a lodged claim.
5. Track the Claim and Respond to Requests
Sign in to UIF Online again to check the information available about your application. The Fund says its platform supports claim tracking and communication during the claim process.
When you check, look for a request for further documents or clarification. Note what is required, how the Fund asks you to provide it and any date shown. Keep copies of what you send. Submission does not mean approval, and approval should not be assumed to mean that a payment has already reached your bank account.
If you cannot find the claim, see an error you do not understand or have been waiting for an update, contact the UIF with your claim reference. Explain the specific issue instead of submitting another claim without guidance.
What If You Need Help?
The UIF contact centre is 0800 030 007. You can also seek assistance at a Department of Employment and Labour labour centre. Have your claim reference and the details of your question ready, but do not post your ID number, bank account or claim documents in public comments.
If you return to work while receiving or seeking unemployment benefits, inform the UIF promptly and follow the instructions for your case.
