Western Cape Government Announces 2026 Electrical Apprenticeship and Health & Safety Training for West Coast Residents

The Western Cape Government Department of Infrastructure has opened applications for two training programmes in the construction sector for 2026, targeting unemployed youth residing in the West Coast region. These opportunities are designed to equip young people with skills and practical experience in electrical artisan work and occupational health and safety within infrastructure and construction environments.

Who Can Apply?

Both programmes are exclusively available to South African citizens who are unemployed and reside in the West Coast region. Age criteria differ slightly for each programme:

  • Health and Safety Officer: 18 to 34 years old
  • Electrical Apprenticeship: 18 to 30 years old

Entry Requirements

Health and Safety Officer

  • Minimum education level: NQF Level 3 (equivalent to Grade 11 or NCV Level 3)
  • Recommended: Prior experience in trades related to construction, facility maintenance, roadworks, cleaning, waste management, or renewable energy sectors (including EPWP experience).
  • Good health and physical fitness to work on construction sites and at heights.

Electrical Apprenticeship

  • Minimum education level: NQF Level 1 (Grade 9 or NCV Level 2) with Pure Mathematics included in the qualification.
  • Applicants must be physically fit and willing to work at construction sites and heights.
  • Good health required, including willingness to undergo medical and substance-use examinations.

Programme Details and Benefits

Health and Safety Officer Programme: Participants receive hands-on and theoretical training in occupational health and safety applicable to construction sites. Training includes learning how to apply health and safety regulations, maintaining site safety, and performing administrative tasks. Successful candidates receive a monthly stipend of R3,000 plus a R2,000 monthly allowance.

Electrical Apprenticeship: The apprenticeship combines theoretical learning, simulation, and practical on-site electrical training. It is aimed at those who want to follow a career pathway to becoming qualified electrical artisans. Successful participants will earn a monthly stipend of R5,500 plus a R2,000 monthly allowance.

Location and Duration

Both programmes are based in the West Coast region of the Western Cape, with training and practical exposure potentially taking place at various construction sites across the region. The exact duration is tied to signing a 12-month Training Agreement.
