AFGRI Artisan Training Programme 2026 for Tractor and Earthmoving Mechanics in South Africa

AFGRI has announced a structured artisan training programme for 2026 targeting unemployed youth interested in becoming qualified tractor or earthmoving mechanics. This opportunity offers a three-year apprenticeship combining technical learning, workplace experience, and support towards a nationally recognised trade qualification.

About the Opportunity

The AFGRI Equipment Artisan Training programme addresses the shortage of skilled artisans in South Africa’s agricultural and earthmoving machinery sectors. It is a full apprenticeship designed for young South Africans seeking a practical technical career alternative to university. The programme includes training in equipment repair, maintenance, diagnostics, parts handling, and workshop procedures, supported by AgriSETA and MerSETA.

Who Can Apply and Requirements

Applicants must have completed Grade 12 with either Mathematics or Technical Mathematics (Mathematical Literacy is not accepted). A valid driver’s licence is mandatory. While not compulsory, subjects like Engineering Science, Physical Science, Engineering Graphics and Design, Diesel Trade Theory, and Motor Trade Theory can enhance an applicant’s chances. Candidates should possess good communication skills, basic administrative ability, computer literacy, and be motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work as part of a team.

Training Details and Duration

This apprenticeship spans three years with a maximum contract period of four years and includes a six-month probation phase. Training integrates workplace exposure at AFGRI branches, formal technical learning modules, supplier-led sessions, and mentoring. Apprentices will gain hands-on experience in diagnostics, equipment servicing, workshop systems, customer support, stock control, and administrative duties.

Location and Placement

Training placements are available at AFGRI branches across South Africa, including locations such as Polokwane, Bethlehem, Brits, Middelburg, George, Bellville, Pietermaritzburg, Empangeni, Kempton Park, Nelspruit, Tzaneen, and Kokstad. Applicants should be prepared to relocate based on operational requirements.

Training Costs and Work-Back Obligation

The cost of training is covered by AFGRI provided the apprentice passes all subjects. Failed subjects must be retaken at the apprentice’s expense, which may delay qualification. There is a work-back obligation equal to the duration of the apprenticeship; for example, a three-year apprenticeship requires a three-year work-back period after completion. Early termination of the programme may result in repayment of training costs.

Application Process and Deadline

There are 40 posts open for this artisan training programme. Interested candidates must apply by 30 September 2026. Applications are submitted online through the official AFGRI recruitment platform. For the application, please visit the AFGRI Artisan Training Opportunities 2026 application page.

What Applicants Should Know

The first six months serve as a probationary period to evaluate both the apprentice’s fit for the career and AFGRI’s suitability as a training provider. Candidates should be comfortable working practically in workshops and demonstrate discipline, reliability, and motivation for technical learning. This apprenticeship aligns with national trade certification standards and offers a pathway to a stable artisan career in high-demand fields.
