Checking your UIF employment record is a useful first step. If you have lost your job and may qualify for unemployment benefits, the next step is to submit a claim. Viewing your contributions or claim status does not start an application.
UIF is an insurance fund, not a personal savings account that you can withdraw at any time. The benefit you may receive depends on your circumstances, contribution history and the Fund’s assessment of your claim.
Check Which Benefit You Need
This guide focuses on unemployment benefits. They may be relevant if you were retrenched, dismissed or reached the end of a fixed-term contract. Ordinary resignation generally does not qualify; if you say you were forced to resign, ask the UIF how to document your circumstances.
The UIF also has separate applications for benefits such as illness, maternity, parental leave, adoption and dependants’ benefits. Select the benefit that matches your situation rather than submitting an unemployment claim for a different reason.
Prepare Your Details and Documents
Before starting, gather your identification details, contact information, banking details, employment dates and the reason your job ended. Keep your payslips, employment contract and any retrenchment, dismissal or contract-expiry documents available in case the UIF asks for them.
You may also need information from your former employer. These form names are useful to recognise:
| Form | What it is for |
|---|---|
| UI-19 | The employer’s declaration of employment information. |
| UI-2.1 | Application for unemployment benefits, particularly relevant when completing a paper application. |
| UI-2.8 | Authorisation to pay approved benefits into a bank account. |
| UI-6A | Confirmation of unemployment status that may be requested for continued payments. |
Follow the instructions for your particular application. Do not assume that every document listed in an older online guide must be uploaded in every case. The Department publishes these forms separately on its official website.
How to Submit a UIF Claim Online
The official employee claims platform is UIF Online. It replaced the older uFiling employee claims portal, so check that you are using the current service before entering personal information.
- Visit UIF Online. Register as an individual if you do not already have access, or sign in to your account.
- Choose the appropriate benefit. If your employment ended and you are claiming unemployment benefits, select that application.
- Enter your employment details carefully. Check your employer’s name, your last day of work and the reason employment ended against your documents.
- Provide the information and documents requested by the platform. Upload clear copies where required. Give accurate banking details for an account you can access.
- Review before submitting. Correct errors, then keep your submission confirmation or reference number.
- Track the application. Return to UIF Online to check its progress and respond if the Fund requests further information.
Submitting an application does not guarantee approval or payment by a particular date. The UIF must assess the claim and may need to resolve missing or conflicting employment information.
What If Your Employer’s Information Is Missing?
A missing UI-19 declaration or a gap in your employment record can complicate a claim. Contact your former employer to request the correct declaration, and keep any payslips or other proof of employment that you have.
If your payslip shows UIF deductions but your record does not reflect the employment, raise the discrepancy directly with the UIF. Explain what you found, ask what evidence to provide and keep the enquiry reference. Do not assume that a missing entry means you are ineligible, or that a deduction on a payslip guarantees approval. The Fund needs to review the facts of your case.
If You Cannot Apply Online
Ask for help at a Department of Employment and Labour labour centre or call the UIF contact centre on 0800 030 007. You can also use the contact details published by the Department to follow up on an existing enquiry.
Apply as soon as you can after becoming unemployed. Official guidance published in different places has described different application periods, so if time has passed, contact the UIF about the deadline that applies to your claim rather than relying on a date in an unofficial article.
After You Submit
Keep your claim reference and copies of the documents you provided. Check the application for requests you need to answer. If you begin working again, inform the UIF promptly and follow its instructions about your claim. If an application is refused, request the reason and ask the Fund about its official review or appeal process.
There is no need to pay an agent who promises to secure approval. Submit sensitive documents only through an official UIF channel or when instructed by the Department.
