About the Learnership

The Trainee Controller role involves overseeing the movement of petroleum products using advanced operational systems, ensuring volume accuracy, product quality, and site safety. The training covers multiple technical domains including pipeline operations, risk and pollution control, product metering, minor maintenance, and pipeline shutdown procedures. Trainees also gain exposure to specialised activities such as the launching and receiving of pigs and spheres used in pipeline maintenance.

Who Can Apply

This opportunity welcomes two main categories of applicants:

  • Grade 12 route: Applicants must have a National Senior Certificate with Mathematics and Physical Science.
  • N3 Technical Engineering route: Applicants should hold an N3 qualification in one of the following fields: Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Metering Control & Instrumentation.

This makes the programme accessible to recent school leavers as well as students from technical and TVET colleges pursuing related engineering fields.

Additional Requirements

  • A valid Code 08 to 10 driver’s licence.
  • Successful completion of competency assessments including technical ability, numeric, verbal, and abstract reasoning tests.
  • Good command of the English language.
  • Personal competencies such as analytical ability, attention to detail, perseverance, conflict handling, and the ability to work both independently and under pressure.

Programme Location and Reporting

The learnership is conducted across various locations in South Africa, with participants reporting to the Senior Specialist in Youth Development at Transnet Corporate Centre.
