The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) has announced 42 openings for Independent Correctional Centre Visitor (ICCV) roles at 38 correctional centres nationwide. These contract positions, lasting 36 months, provide an opportunity for South African citizens with a Grade 12 qualification to contribute to correctional oversight without requiring university or diploma-level education.
About the Opportunity
Independent Correctional Centre Visitors serve a vital role in supporting oversight within the correctional system. They conduct visits to correctional centres, interact with inmates and officials, document complaints, maintain accurate records, and submit reports. The positions are not for correctional officers or security personnel but focus on administrative, communication, and accountability tasks.
Who Can Apply and Key Requirements
- Minimum education: Matric / Grade 12 or Senior Certificate
- Work experience: No specific prior experience is required, but applicants should be computer literate and detail-oriented.
- Skills: Verbal and written communication, knowledge of Batho Pele principles, ability to work independently and under pressure, and accuracy in data capturing and report writing.

Preference will be given to applicants residing near the correctional centre where the vacancy is available.

- Duration: 36 months contract
- Salary: R89,046 per annum plus 37% in lieu of benefits (position advertised at Level 5 on a 3/8th basis; salary reflects part-time status)
Important Considerations Before Applying
Applicants must understand that these roles are administrative and oversight-focused, involving complaint handling and reporting rather than security duties. The community recommendation is a crucial eligibility requirement and not a general character reference. Applicants should clarify the exact format with JICS and ensure it directly supports the ICCV role application.
The application must include a completed and signed Z83 form and an up-to-date CV demonstrating relevant skills and competencies. Online submissions require combining these documents into a single PDF file named with the applicant’s initials and surname. Photographs or image files are not accepted as application documents.
How to Apply
Applications may be submitted online using vacancy-specific Google Forms linked to each correctional centre or by hand delivery where indicated.
To apply, follow these steps:
- Choose the preferred correctional centre and note the vacancy reference number.
- Complete the new Z83 application form, downloadable from the official DPSA vacancy portal or DPSA portal.
- Prepare a CV highlighting relevant skills such as computer literacy, communication, report writing, and administrative experience.
